Have you ever been just completely not in the mood to make a decision? This is me 99% of the time. How did a sushi dinner lead to me getting strangers to let me color their hair whatever I want? I will get to that. First little about me, I am Lizz Holt, a hair artist in Austin, TX. My studio is a cozy four chair suite just east of downtown. I do a lot of really fun hair color.
During my most recent visit to Los Angeles, I visited one of my favorite sushi chain Sugarfish . It's the best for two reasons, not only is it delicious, there is a menu item called trust me. Trust me is a series of dishes 6-8 and it's basically like ordering chef's choice. When you go there, you have get to have a little bit of everything to satisfy your palette without trying to look at the menu and decide what you want.
A couple weeks ago, I had some openings on my schedule. I decided to try a different approach to filling up my time. I made a post on Instagram stating that for a discounted amount I will decide what we do to your hair. I got three responses and was able fit in two of them the following day.
Sarah showed up while I was finishing up a men's haircut. As I glanced over and greeted her, I was surprised to see that she was already rocking some pretty unicorn hair. When I was able to sit her down in my chair I saw that her hair was shoulder length, had purple at her roots and pink on the ends. She explained that she had done the color with Overtone.
Although her hair looked pretty cool, I decided to go a little more unconventional. I wanted to give her something that no one really asks for, but make it look really good. Her hair was already lightened, so it was only a small task to remove the purple from her roots. After removing the purple, the underlying pigment was a soft pink. I custom mixed a few color and applied them. Brittany Craig was assisting me that day and gave her a really bomb style out.
My next client that signed up for Trust Me, was Miki. She had super long brown hair, that had never really been colored. A blank canvas. I was immediately drawn to her nails when she sat down in my chair, they were a fluorescent orange. I painted the ends of her hair with bleach and let her process.
I didn't fully decide what I was going to do until I was behind the color bar. I custom mixed three shades, one of them was a fiery deep orange, the second was a neon orange and the third was a highly pigmented yellow. On a side bar about Miki, she brought me Franklin's BBQ and it made my heart immensely happy.
A week after Miki's appointment I caught back up with her to see how she is liking her new paint job. I also asked her a few questions.
1. Were you nervous about changing your hair?
I wasn't nervous about coloring my hair at all. I've known for a while that I wanted to do something totally new with my hair, but I'm super indecisive and could never commit to a color. I love all the colors!! How could I choose?! Just letting Lizz have some free range on color was kind of a dream come true.
2. What made you decide to trust me to do this?
Since I had been following Lizz on Instagram for so long it was easy to trust her decisions. Her quality of work is shown in every post, so I knew whatever she was going to my hair was going to be beautiful. Hair along with any other creative endeavor turns out best when the artist is given the freedom to create! I trusted Lizz as an artist and a stylist and ended up with hair that might have never been otherwise.
3. How did the new hair make you feel?
It's crazy what a new hair-do can do! At first, it was hard getting used to seeing someone else in the mirror, but that quickly changed. I actually feel waaaaaay more like myself now. I don't know how she did it, but Lizz was able to give me a color that truly matches my personality and now amplifies it! I feel fierce y'all!
4. Would you encourage others to participate in something like this?
YES!!!!! Do it!!! For me, it was life changing. Give up some control and you'll end up with some amazing results. :)
There you have it folks.
I am a strong believer that trust is the foundation of all relationships. As a stylist it makes my job a lot easier when my clients trust me to give them awesome hair.
If you were paying attention earlier you would've seen that three people actually responded to the Trust Me post. As for the third response, Sharayah is actually one of my clients. I found some time to see her the week after and she was also super happy with the outcome.
This is actually her first time having vivid hair. Thank you to all the lovely ladies that participated in this!
